The calendar content changes in place when you navigate through the calendar or events, but the surrounding content (this text that you are reading, for instance), stays constant. The calendar behaves like a self-contained "object" that is embedded into the page.
The sidebar on this page and other pages on the site includes a calendar preview -- a list of upcoming events. When you click on those links, you are automatically linked through to this page, no matter what page you are linking from. In technical terms, this page has been configured to serve Calendar requests from all pages on the site.
The calendar colors and style are controllable through stylesheets, so it always fits into whatever website it is placed in.
